what is soap good for?

guslI am too skeptical and untrusting for my own good.
When I was 11 or 12, in Angola, I decided to stop using soap, since it had no visible function.
I didn't use it for a week or so... one day in the shower, I noticed that I couldn't seem to get the grime off of me: I rubbed little bits off, but there was always more, and my skin was getting irritated from all the rubbing... how frustrating!
I asked my father for help, and after a brief cross-examination, he recommended I use soap. That day I learned about the chemical properties of soap.
This episode is very much "me": I avoid doing things whose workings I don't understand.
