* book flights:
I'm tempted to make a visit to the Bay Area on the way back, say from July 4th till the 8th (if they agree to drop me off in SFO, I'd only have to pay for a one-way SFO->YVR flight). Is anyone around to host me? (I imagine spending a couple of nights in each place). [livejournal.com profile] rdore?

* remember to enter the USA as a B1 (business) visitor

* bring my GSM phone, buy a prepaid card

* rent a car? (with Enterprise it would cost <$500 for June 10 - July 2... but adding insurance + gas + taxes should make this infeasible... I might instead rent for a couple of weekends.)

* buy a new digital camera. I've not had one since ~October. I wouldn't hesitate to get a Powershot again, if they compressed their own videos.

There used to be a bazillion conversion utilities on linux. I last looked a while ago, so I can't recommend anything (or even remember).

For context: regarding video compression, I linked to Windows Movie Maker above, which unfortunately only works file by file.

yes, but it's awkward because I dual boot, and synching the camera put the files in the Windows partition (with the PowerShot). What I should do is put them on the external HD (before and after conversion).

How much windows stuff do you use? I run it via vmware these days, and use real operating systems.

This is the state of my Ubuntu: http://gustavolacerda.livejournal.com/771169.html

It's generally been quite a headache. Besides the above list, I'd also need to synch the camera with Ubuntu.
