In December, I'll hopefully be moving to campus. December is looking really busy: Machine Learning project due, Vision final, NIPS+workshops, grading CS121, and more stuff.

A friend recently suggested Fairview. It's a great location, rather lively, rather close to the UBC Village, and contains a nice café (the Beanery). Fairview is mostly undergrads, but I wonder how many housemates I'd have, and if I can choose to be with older/grad student types. My default choice is Thunderbird (undecided between a quad, studio and 1BR).

In any case, even though you're not nominally allowed to see the room offered to you, they do tell you the exact apartment number, so you can always knock and say hello.

I was wondering if you could recommend any free resources to help me learn about Machine Learning and its applications.

hmmm... dunno about free. Bishop's book, which everyone considers the standard, can be had cheaply (when you consider the normal price of specialized textbooks).

The only free online book I know is more specialized: http://www.gaussianprocess.org/gpml/

actually, you'll probably be comfortable with the 1st chapter, at least (I haven't read the rest):

If you'd prefer to not live with undergrads, then get a studio or a 1BR because the age requirement for Thunderbird quads is 20, which isn't much different from Fairview's 19. You can't choose to live with older people in Thunderbird or Fairview; you're just quasi-matched based on the questions you answer on the application (I say quasi because I wanted to live in a co-ed unit with messy people and I live in a single gender unit with really tidy people).
