memories

Lately, I've been paying attention to how my memory works. Essentially, I'm trying to manage the inevitable process of forgetting.

As much as possible, I try to use my digital camera, my credit card, and write to this blog, so that it's possible to piece my memories together should the need (or curiosity) arise. I almost certainly do it too much. It is a quirk of mine to live by "All information is holy! Information must not be lost!", and I only know of one other person who shares this quirk. It's quite an inconvenient quirk to have when your HD is full (as is the case now).

Being a recent transplant here, I've obviously have formed lots of new memories that will stay with me for a while, and I've also done lots of forgetting (though harder to verify).

Why write this now?
Because apparently, Noam and I chatted in 2004, completely forgot about each other, met each other again in 2006, and since then we never suspected that we'd spoken to each other before. I only found this out thanks to LJ.
(and no, no memories were recalled: it's as if 2004-me was a different person telling me that they met Noam)

Don't forget to let your brain generalise and throw away a bit...

So long as the generalisation is correct - but then, all generalisations are wrong ;)

My memory is horrible, which made organic chem very, very challenging for me!

The primary reason I have an LJ is to keep track of what I do, and how I feel. Without LJ, I would have forgotten so many things!

I have a horrible memory for faces and people-meetings. This happened to me before, with my external thesis committee member. I had seen him give a talk at a conference, and later communicated with him on various thesis proposal related things by email/phone. But apparently we had also had dinner together at the conference (with my advisor and a few other people). We only figured this out when I came to visit him, and he remembered (having a photographic memory for faces).

Derek Parfitt said it is a different person. Though I'm surprised it happened so fast.

Having just read the violinstudents community and not found anything about learning the violin that resonated with me I looked for people who included "flow" in their interests (thinking of Mihály Csíkszentmihályi), "reckless intuitions of an epistemic hygienist" is a nice description and it did resonate with me, so I thought I'd read some more of your words.

Somehow I'd never heard of Parfit. I'm tickled by this paradox.

I know someone who's been truly troubled by their moral obligation to fill the world with happy boxes.
