I occasionally meet people who I identify as potential friends / partners, if only we didn't live so far away from each other. And since online relationships are less valuable than IRL ones, I might not bother getting these people's contacts at all, since keeping track of all these people quickly becomes intractable.
Also, it's not very nice to periodically email all such contacts asking whether they've moved to your area yet, especially if this is the only thing you ever send them. Ideally, they would already have this information available and up-to-date on their website (or some other place online), and your agent would alert you when they moved to your area.
If I were to suddenly spend a week in Atlanta or Nijmegen or Paris, I wouldn't know of anyone who I could see. Yet, I'm sure I know several people in all of these places: I just don't know who they are (partly because I forgot that this is where they lived, and partly because they've moved there since). So next time you find yourself alone in an unfamiliar city, remember: if social software worked, you wouldn't be!

I would also like:
* software visualizing your contacts geographically (Google Earth?)
* geographic social software: find friend-of-a-friend's at your new location
