The notion of a fractional iteration of a function was one of my obsessions when I was in high school... but there was no Wikipedia or Google back then, so I never knew about the work that existed.

I would like to figure out what the Fransén–Robinson_constant has to do with the differintegral operator.

tangential: while trying to write this reply I couldn't remember the name of the constant (kept googling "Franzen"), and came across a list of constants sorted by continued fraction representation

A friend and me figured out how to take arbitrary real powers/roots of linear functions of a real variable when I was in high school, but it's a shame that it's really hard to find the functional cube root of sin(x) in the interval (-pi/2,pi/2)
