university name recognition

I would like to see a dataset of university name recognition, as a heatmap. Two dimensions I imagine seeing are "degree of name recognition" (what fraction of people recognize it) and "width of name recognition" (how peaked the distribution of people-who-recognize-it is).

Googling suggests that there is no such publicly accessible data. Economists and freakonomists should be interested in producing some, and it should be pretty cheap.

How would you write a qualification test to prove you're in a certain location? Or would you trust people?
