Sometimes it's non-trivial to decide where to post something.

My LJ, Twitter, Facebook have very different audiences (all numbers are guesswork):

* LJ Public: mostly North America. Google will index what I write. Big audience (40-150). High response rate.
* LJ Friends-only: mostly North America. I can post private stuff. Medium-big audience (30-100). High response rate.
* Twitter: also mostly North America, but a small audience (5-20?). Low response rate (80-90% of my undirected Tweets get zero responses).
* FB status: possibly has the biggest audience; certainly the most diverse (very international, and includes people I know from all periods and walks of life). Also, I'm friends with professors, whose opinion of me is important for my career. Medium-high response rate.
* FB Wall: haven't used it much.

I choose where to post based on privacy-level, casualness and length, based on the information above.

I've recently been persuaded to post a couple things as notes on Facebook. Apart from the fact that it's rather more difficult and confusing than posting on LJ, it's worked out well, since it is a much bigger audience. I'm probably more likely to post philosophy-centric things there, since a higher percentage of the audience there are philosophers. But it's been making me wonder what role LJ and Facebook should each play. I suspect that a higher percentage of the potential audience reads (or at least skims) every LJ post than with Facebook things. At least, I never read more than the most recent page of things on Facebook, which I'm sure is only about a third or perhaps even a tenth of what gets posted. And I don't often read even that much.

I'm with you on this. Anything opinionated or snarky has to go on LJ. Anything negative about my work has to go on LJ. FB is great for getting in touch with people, but not a very useful means of getting to know someone.
