language barrier
Feb. 15th, 2005 08:34 pmNelson's coming to reclaim his room tomorrow. So this Saturday I went to Ikea to finally buy the kledingsopberger thingy (because the other room doesn't have enough shelf space).
On the way back, I saw 3 people "talking" in sign language. They were having a great time... giggling to themselves, and occasionally hiding from each other for a minute (maybe that's how they whisper). Anyway, one of the women also signed to me with a gesture that I interpreted as "hehe, isn't that ridiculous???"... I shrugged and genuinely smiled (maybe because the scene was so interesting), without attempting to overcome the language barrier. Though who knows, maybe they can read my lips.
I happen to be reading Oliver Sacks's "The man who mistook his wife for a hat", which is pretty good so far.
