It's a laptop, so I close the lid and it goes into sleep mode. It's somewhere between hibernate and standby, I think; I haven't used Windows in many years and am not actually sure of the difference between the two..

Same here (so I voted "standby" because it seemed closest).

In standby, the computer is still using power slowly to keep the contents of memory alive. In hibernate, the contents of memory are written to disk, and the machine is off.

Ah! Thank you. I've changed my poll answer to standby.

Same Here (mac laptop) but I voted "other", because I'm weird.

depends how much stuff I'm in the middle of, but often I like to turn it off, and start the next day with a blank sheet, so to speak.

Oops. I voted "turn it off", but I should've put "standby". I have a laptop, and at night I either shut it or run a little app that turns my music down slowly and sets it to standby at the end of a prescribed time period.

Eee 1000HA, Windows XP.

My only computer is a laptop. I usually leave it on overnight at least to keep chat programs running, and also often doing some sort of file sharing. However, my computer usually gets shutdown when I go from one place to another. This is mostly so I know I will have full battery life if I want it.

I lock the screen and leave it on. I hate waiting for machines to boot up. They should be ready to service me at a moments notice.

I leave everything on, but allow it to take certain power-saving actions.

My laptops mostly sleep after a while when they get bored (screen off, speed stepped down, and I forget, but some are able to turn off some of the circuits on the chip, and RAM). I'm not sure how exactly that compares to standby.

My work desktop stays on; it's a server. However, it turns off displays and hard drive after a while.

My older laptop has a flaky battery; at high load, it sometimes just fails to output enough power and the thing shuts down. Both laptops at low load figure out that they're running low on battery and thus they hibernate. And my desktop was off when I moved offices.

That's the only times I turn any computers off. I hit the off button once this year, when one of my computers (I forget which) got wedged.
