I just won a free weekend ticket for the Winterhawk bluegrass festival in New York!
I had just tuned in to 91.9FM, and I heard them annoucing that caller number 8 would get free tickets for the above-mentioned festival, featuring Tony Trischka.

1 800 573 2100... busy... 1 800 573 2100... busy... 1 800 573 2100... answer signal, followed by "Hello, you are caller number 8 and our winner."

I was surprised, but reacted so coldly he thought it was a mistake.
I am traveling on August 3rd, and at most I would go on the Friday and Saturday morning. I may sell them or give them to a friend.

okay... backtracking.

This Sunday I dropped my parents off at the airport. We had spent the week together. 90% of that was in the hotel room, which really wasn't bad. It's much better than going places with them (i.e. shopping or sightseeing), or walking slowly for my mother.

After dropping them off, I briefly went to MIT and jammed piano with Jenny Sendova, a nice lady who helps RSI. She introduced me to the concept of classical piano blues, and showed me the Shoeboot (Schubert) blues. She showed me the correct way to play Bach's WTC's Prelude in C.
I had seen their thing about exactly a year ago, and found it extremely cool. I even asked if they accepted volunteers, but somehow I forgot to apply for this year.

So my last normal outing was last Tuesday night, to the Cantab. They went, but they didn't fit. It was too noisy upstairs so they went downstairs to be entertained by a Portuguese-speaking Israeli folk guitarist, and they left soon. At the end of the night, Joe Mahoney led another acoustic blues/rock jam outside. We played with a harmonica blues man. Among others, we played a 12-bar blues, and "Stayin' Alive". At the end of it, at about 2am, a very drunk NEC violinist named Adda convinced me to lend her my fiddle. She showed me some tricks about elbow position and bowing direction, and I showed her some crazy slides. As soon as I left, I realized I had just shown her the A-D-D-A shuffle. (okay, it's a bit of a stretch...)

That weekend (July 13) I saw a string quartet from NEC at H-Sq, and I thought the sound of the viola was really beautiful. It's a $15K instrument. I briefly jammed with them, and later with Not The Beatles. Then I went to Wes's trivia game party. I hate trivia games, because they rarely require thinking, my kind of thinking anyway... It's all about memory retrieval.

There are not as many of the big names at this folk festival - Falcon Ridge had all the big names on the circuit, as well as Ani DiFranco.

But the one person on this list who you MUST see is Jeff Lang. I don't know if you've heard him but he is awesome on the guitar.
