Wubi/Ubuntu fail
Feb. 25th, 2009 09:33 pmSo I installed Ubuntu using Wubi.
While downloading/installing some updates, the system froze. Only the mouse pointer was moving. Even Caps Lock was unresponsive. The only way to get out was turn off the machine. And since Wubi is so sensitive to such things, the root won't mount anymore.
I got about 30 minutes of Ubuntu enjoyment. Time to try a proper install... while ensuring that I can still boot from the Recovery Partition.
---
After uninstalling Ubuntu via Wubi, I seem to unable to boot from the LiveCD! It jumps right to Windows... I wonder if Wubi's install/uninstall somehow damaged the ability to boot from other devices.
Indeed, when I read the CD on Windows, it offers "Install CD Booter"! Apparently, Wubi burned a Ubuntu8.04 CD without my knowledge, although it said this was unnecessary!
CORRECTION: I have 2 Ubuntu CDs. I can boot from one of them (8.04, which doesn't work with Wubi), but that one has corrupted files, so I can't even 'startx'. Time to download again, and this time look at the checksum.

Date: 2009-02-26 08:55 am (UTC)This is kind of surreal to read since I just had a most excellent Ubuntu experience a few hours ago after fighting with openSUSE for several days.
