Suppose you have an idea for a multi-player game (i.e. > 1 player), and you're really itching to play/playtest it online.

Right now, I'm interested in Bid Tic Tac Toe (via Andrew Arnold), which is a 2-player game.

Since this is a game of imperfect information, playing by email/chat doesn't work (more precisely, you'd need an honour system, and preventing oneself from cheating would be too effortful)

I wouldn't know how to make this a web game (other than by having the players constantly reload the page). I guess I would need something like AJAX.

Also, if you're in Vancouver, hit me up for a paper&pencil game.

Flash or Java would probably work?

how would the server store the state of the game? how would it communicate with the client browsers?

I haven't worked with those games so I don't know the specifics, but I've seen games do it before. There are Flash MMORPGs like Dofus, so I assume that multiplayer Flash games are possible, even though most of them don't do it.

http://volity.org/ is supposed to make building these things easy. It doesn't seem to have taken off, unfortunately.

All you need is something running in the browser (Java, Flash, Javascript) and for that something to have a socket connection to your server (XMLHttpRequest in the case of javascript; this is one of the components of AJAX).

in theory, you could play by email/chat using crypto: players both send their moves, encrypted, and then upon receipt they send the keys. then they can both compute the outcome of the round and reach agreement.
