For the last 10 years, I've been using computers to do integrations for me (almost always numerically).

We got comments back on the SODA paper that we got in, which said "great result, but instead of this nasty combinatorial proof, shouldn't you just integrate?"

We tried and failed to do precisely that -- four of us, an entire year. We know it could be done. But our calculus was just way too rusty.

I had the same problem last year. I aced the math section on the GRE and didn't stop to think that while, sure, I'd been doing algebra, geometry and trig regularly in my shop, I hadn't really used calculus in 10 years. Whoops.
