Despite being a rather "musical" person, I am *many* years behind the times in popular culture (this includes "alternative culture"). To quantify this, I would bet that I know fewer currently-active bands than 99% of my peers.

I've recently been pleased to discover a lot of good music by:

Meat Loaf
Queen
David Bowie

I grew up without popular music, so I know about catching up. And of course, anyone who loves music will have to catch up to the good stuff that came before they were even born. Are you deliberately exploring by date, or are those just the artists you happen to have come across by chance? They're all from about the same time period.

It is possible that my mind is digesting the stylistic changes very slowly (now that I know the lyrics to every Beatles song!), as a scheme for optimal compression.

But no, it's not deliberate.

Even though I listen to a lot of music, there are quite a few artists I haven't listened to all that much until recently. Like the Beatles.

I still haven't figured out what the word "emo" means although I hear it all the time.

Artistic and tortured in a self-inflicted way such as wearing sweaters that are two sizes too small in inappropriate weather.

originally in the music sense, it was not what people think of it as now (see above comment), but as a splinter punk music subgenre (c.f. early Green Day, Screeching Weasel, etc.)

how would you describe singer-songwriter types with a nearly-crying moaning voice, and whose lyrics wallow in self-pity?
Boston circa '02 had a ton of these annoying types.

wow, I really wasn't familiar with either of these definitions. I've always guessed that it's short for "emotional" so I figured it just meant touchy-feely music or something. Green Day I actually listen to, but had no idea they were connected to emo!
