why, in this day and age, do people still ask for paper receipts? I don't think they are harder to falsify.

I'm currently in a situation in which I'll probably have to wait for my next bank statement before I can claim a reimbursement. The bank was able to print me a "transaction report", which shows my account number but not my name. CMU knows my account number, since I get paid by direct deposit... but the accounting people don't want to go through that much trouble.

There's a tremendous amount of conservatism in accounting. Some of it is justified: when you change accounting standards, you risk getting an Enron. Some of it is annoying, such as what you're facing.

Part of why people want paper receipts is wanting to have all their receipts in one place. If all receipts came in electronic, that would be fine, but in the meantime people will want at least the ability to create paper receipts, and if lazy will want this done for them.
