The doors in this house are old, made of wood, and have had to be shaven on occasion so that they can close again, in order to adapt to the house's dynamic conformation.

In the past week, I've also been noticing that they are LOUD. It takes a lot of effort to open or close them without making loud noises. Not creaky, squeaky noises, mind you, but rather the slammy, bammy type. Even turning the lock causes a loud noise.

This past week, I was awoken early on ~4 days, so I now consider this a serious threat to my mental health.

I believe that part of the problem is that the doors have no springs. I've tried to dampen the noise by making a little roll from a single paper towel and sticking it (with scotch tape) into strategic places. One of these worked by pushing the door in, countering the slamming... but 48h later, my springy roll of paper towel has become flat and useless.

Somehow this was not a problem last year.

Any tips?

use fabric. same idea, lower compression rate.

in college some halls required we hang a sock or washcloth over the door to minimize the slamming.

Your local hardware store sells rubber weather stripping and adhesive rubber pads in a variety of shapes. Pick a roll/sheet that's fairly thin.

Sleeping with earplugs, or if you wind them uncomfortable, perhaps a very thin shooting earmuff? To address the door problem directly, the rubber weatherstripping suggestion seems best.
