I just found out that Nina Paley (an excellent cartoonist who [livejournal.com profile] jcreed once linked to) is a volunteer for The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement. From what I understand, they are not a joke.

This page has some amusing cartoons of hers for them.

I've been at least a supporter since I found out about them some 7 years ago. I'm an off-and-on volunteer.

There's already more of us than we can support in comfort. A good chunk of the world population is living (and dying) in misery. We're having a profound impact on the chemical composition of the planet's atmosphere, the results of which we cannot reliably predict except that they'll probably not be beneficial to us. And at the rate the human population is growing now, we're eventually going to hit the hard ceiling of what we can support at all, and there'll be death and misery on a massive scale from disease, starvation, and fighting over scarce resources—what's already happening on a small scale in some parts of the world. Best to put the brakes on before that happens.

I usually don't think we need to go extinct. Every now and then I'll feel especially pessimistic, but I don't have any good reasons why that would make the world a better place.
