intellectual clubs

I would like to form intellectual clubs independent from universities. It would be a place to find people to collaborate with your studies, be it original research or studying known ideas.

Most of my interests require very little funding, and having other people keep me in check about my goals would give me a lot more (much needed) direction.

Thanks to Bill's journal for reminding me to write about this idea.

I highly recommend Menand's The Metaphysical Club (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0374528497/qid=1018363507/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/102-6312909-8143303) for a nineteenth-century example.
