Dear Americans,

Just out of curiosity, how many of you are following your team during the World Cup?

Any Pittsburghers planning to watch the final on 9 July?

Nope. I didn't even know the World Cup was going on. :-)

I'm with BoingBoing. If it doesn't involve people hitting each other, driving at insane speeds, or shooting guns, I don't care. I do watch biathlon during the Winter Olympics.

not exactly hitting

but there's plenty of running into each other and elbowing.

I don't usually follow soccer (or any sport for that matter) but I probably will watch parts of several games of US, Mexico and Brazil.

Yes, I recently saw the allegedly #5 team in the world play worse than Sweden. Thanks for rubbing that in.

I saw that ranking too. It's pretty meaningless. 0x3 against Czech is worse than one would expect, but it's not really outside the realm of the normal. Oops, I don't know if that's comforting...

Anyway, I really was just curious how aware Americans are of this, since the rest of the world is currently going insane.

The place where I work is ~25% non-Americans, and I have a significantly above-average awareness of the sport, normed for home country. I suspect the median American is almost completely unaware.

I was aware as I was last time around. And will probably follow it with the vague interest I do many sporting events.

I've been watching games when possible, and periodically getting updates at work at lunch hour and towards the end of the day.

And since 7/9 is a Sunday, you bet I'll be watching the final game.

I haven't been following it for want of interest in sports, but I know some of what's going on (like that the US recently lost to Czechia) because of the foreign weblogs and news sources I read.
