Today after hanging out in the Internet cafe, and talking to several friendly strangers, it now turns out that I do get wireless Internet at home, afterall, even if it is a bit slow. All I needed was to boot into Linux, which is what the computer does automatically, but I wasn't letting it, since this went against all my intuitions. This is too bad, as not having a connection was being good for my social life!

Now I need to figure out how to get all that stuff out of the Windows partition... now I finally have a use for my old floppy disks.

---

I've just come back from a WG party, and met several people either looking for a room or looking to rent a room. Fortunately, about 75% of them spoke reasonable English (never mind that in Holland this number would be 95%). Many of them were sociable and had a sense of humour. A cute blond girl even slapped me for not wearing my name tag... maybe Germans aren't that German afterall.

I would ideally like to live between the university and the S-bahn, preferably closer to the latter, otherwise my commute would be around 45 minutes each way. On the other hand, it might be nice to have a daily 15-minute bike ride each way, before and after work. It's not very intense exercise, but it makes sure that I do *something*...

Whatever I do, I will probably stick with it until the end of June, so I better choose carefully. I feel inclined towards getting an apartment for myself alone... I really don't want to deal with housemate problems, if I can avoid it. My social life is apparently doing very well already.

Frequently heard phrases:
- "ah so?" (funny German intonation) = "oh yes"
- "keine ahnung!" ("no idea!")

floppies? That would take days. I recommend uploading to a server or just copying straight off the partiton. There is support for NTFS read now.

First you want to mount it ([x]) which figures out the structure and attaches it your main filesystem tree, basically meaning you can read the files.

Now you have a choice. You can keep them on the Windows partition if you don't need to modify them (currently there's no NTFS write support) or you use some standard tool like cp to move them over.

"ah so" :-) I still find this amusing.

In Swedish it's "jaha" (funny Swedish intonation).
