Today after hanging out in the Internet cafe, and talking to several friendly strangers, it now turns out that I do get wireless Internet at home, afterall, even if it is a bit slow. All I needed was to boot into Linux, which is what the computer does automatically, but I wasn't letting it, since this went against all my intuitions. This is too bad, as not having a connection was being good for my social life!
Now I need to figure out how to get all that stuff out of the Windows partition... now I finally have a use for my old floppy disks.
---
I've just come back from a WG party, and met several people either looking for a room or looking to rent a room. Fortunately, about 75% of them spoke reasonable English (never mind that in Holland this number would be 95%). Many of them were sociable and had a sense of humour. A cute blond girl even slapped me for not wearing my name tag... maybe Germans aren't that German afterall.
I would ideally like to live between the university and the S-bahn, preferably closer to the latter, otherwise my commute would be around 45 minutes each way. On the other hand, it might be nice to have a daily 15-minute bike ride each way, before and after work. It's not very intense exercise, but it makes sure that I do *something*...
Whatever I do, I will probably stick with it until the end of June, so I better choose carefully. I feel inclined towards getting an apartment for myself alone... I really don't want to deal with housemate problems, if I can avoid it. My social life is apparently doing very well already.

Frequently heard phrases:
- "ah so?" (funny German intonation) = "oh yes"
- "keine ahnung!" ("no idea!")
