weird new 3D display technology that seems to use a kind of TENS machine to make you close your eyes alternately.

Why didn't hologram displays, à la Time Traveler, catch on? They really seemed like TheRightThing. (IIRC, this trailer already sounded corny back in 1992, when I played it during a visit to South Africa.)

I came back from Brazil on Saturday morning, and was able to enjoy a full weekend, despite the sleep deprivation.

On Saturday I went to Ed's goth/industrial music thing. The high frequencies were very strong and grating, but I started enjoying myself more once I improvised earplugs (napkins+water). Afterwards, I wandered North to some places on Essex St, where many bars had people playing beer pong (sigh!). Found a packed karaoke bar where you can rent private rooms at $8/person-hour. Ate at an Israeli crêperie called Mõtek (very good!), where I met some women from London.

Yesterday (Sunday), I wanted to go to the East Village but walked in the wrong direction. After ending up at "CB's Comedy Club" for 2 hours (pretty good value; Greer Barnes was my favorite comedian), I ended up at the famous "Bitter End", which was hosting a benefit for Moogy Klingman, featuring Peter Yarrow. I could tell it was really good music from the outside, but I didn't feel like spending $20 just to get in. Next-door to it was "Peculier", a college-ish bar with some character, and a nice and rather quiet yet lively atmosphere (no beer pong; jukebox). I put "Purple Rain" on the jukebox and ended up chatting with an enthusiastic and friendly filmmaker from Paris and his friend from Crown Heights. On my way out, I found "Kenny's Castaway", which has a "Crash Course Karaoke" on Sunday nights, where a live band accompanies the singer(s)! Good times.

Today, Monday, I met up with [personal profile] jcreed at 110th and we walked to Sip. Courtney was there and gave me a friendly greeting from afar.

The cold is bitter. I need to buy a balaclava. QOTD: "'balaclava' sounds like it should be a musical instrument, like an ancient Russian keytar."-jcreed
