So yesterday I finally went to the Grisly Pear, for their weekly jam. It was a balanced jam, lots of young people (something you can't say about most bluegrass scenes). I was having fun improvising with my fiddle, having a pretty good start, got my blood pumpin' real good, when some mandolinist asks to borrow my instrument for a song. I was mildly annoyed, but he seemed to belong there, so I said ok. He starts with some fast shuffling, and proceeds to *completely* blow my mind with his playing.

me - where did you learned to play like that???
guy - I learned from Chubby Wise, Benny Martin, Kenny Baker, Vassar Clements. I've also played for Jimmy Martin and with Bill himself.
me - !!!!
me - you don't look that old!
guy - yeah, I was very young.

He continues to show me more of the good stuff, in styles that are clearly recognizable. His name is Greg Garing, and he has gigs as a singer-guitarist. (What a waste of fiddling talent!)

Here's a fun song from yesterday: Rabbit in the Log

I had some more fun doing Faded Love, jazzin' things up with nice guitar and bass solos.

At the end of the evening, the girl playing old-time fiddle was sure she knew me, and even recognized my name. Turns out she was Melody Allegra, who had told me about this very jam back in April, when I danced to her playing in Central Park, all by myself.

Tonight Hot Rize had a concert in Times Square, but I decided to miss it. But I'm happy to know the NYC scene is so lively. Afterall, this is where Béla Fleck his friends got started. UPDATE: Ralph Stanley will be here on Sunday!! Who wants to come? It was because of listening to Ralph Stanley (specifically James Price) that I decided to learn fiddle back in 2001.
