Wikipedia - Current Events / Past Events is close to what I've been wanting.

It's not perfect:
* there are news items without a corresponding Wikipedia article.
* maybe some articles don't automatically update with the news... each news item that isn't novel should tie into a thread.
* searching for past news is awkward.

Here's a thread with the latest on the mysterious piano man. It's hard get this information otherwise: you would have to do your own news search, and organize the results yourself.
