I've just learned that "Straight Edge" is an offshoot of punk. I like the idea of the "X" symbol: it might prevent annoying incidents of people buying me a beer, because it's what "normal people do" (especially in Northern Europe).

Here's some odd news: Reno police classify Straight Edge as a gang

I believe straightedge is associated with skinhead violence, in addition to anti-drug and anti-beer ideology. So you might want to be careful before getting those X's tattooed on...

Not to worry. I'm anti-tattoo too.

It seems their distinctive trademark is to beat up on frat boys. It wouldn't be a bad thing in Amsterdam, there are many drunken preppies, freshmen and frat idiots that could be thrown in a canal. And I like the idea of the x's, it's kinda hackerish.

Interesting... I had never heard of them while I was living in Reno. I do remember there was a frat-house that was anti-alcohol and anti-drugs and that they took pride in that, but I don't think they were Straight Edgers.
