How can I set up filters on my posts?

crasch has the page http://www.livejournal.com/users/crasch/friends/geek
which only features 2 posts, both by himself.
If I make a friends group and add myself to it, its friends page would show all my entries.
Didcrasch do this by creating a friends group called "geek"? If so, how do you label posts as "geek"? He can't be messing with their security, because then they would no longer be public.
