I think they're wrong to use the word "memory" here. I'd be willing to bet it has nothing to do with memory; it's the perception itself that's different.
They've known for a while that you're less likely to notice new differences in a person you know very well (or an animal, etc.) It's not that you see them and then forget about them... you never notice them in the first place, because your mind sees that you recognize them and doesn't look any further at greater detail.
