A couple of weeks ago, my Canon camera has been dead with a "lens error", probably due to dust in the lens (it had a dark spot that shifted once in a while). It's my second Canon to suffer this fate.

I'm a fan of these simple Canon cameras. My biggest complaint is that when shooting video, they produce huge AVIs (~100MB / minute), which I later need to compress myself.

Any ideas?

Is this an SLR? If it is, could the metal contacts between the lens and the camera body be dirty?

I'm pretty happy with my Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR3. The video quality is fantastic and it takes pretty good still photos too. But not as good as an SLR.

They now make ones that are "rugged" or "tough". Supposedly can handle more abuse. Also look for one that records movies in H.264. That'll give you small files while still looking good.

I have this camera. It's worth its weight in gold.
