a weight has been lifted
Sep. 24th, 2010 01:30 amHaving decided to drop "Analysis & Probability" and having made visible progress on "Inference", I now feel much more balanced.
"Inference" still isn't easy, partly because of notation that I'm not accustomed to, partly because my math is gappy (e.g. tricks about geometric series), partly because the instructor is very fast (he has amazing skill with the chalk, and an excellent teacher overall, despite assuming a lot of background from us); but today, after getting the TA's help and working through problems with Diego (during our spatiotemporally overlapping office hours FTW!), this semester feels much more doable.
The other two classes are manageable. Stochastic Processes has the most fun material. Today we saw linear differential and difference equations, which was a big gap in my math education, but seems to be really easy. Met a few new classmates afterwards. Being in the evening, our class attracts several finance professionals.
The biggest challenge for me is the task-switching. I want to focus on a single course for several days at a time, and neglect all the others. I don't know if I'll get away with this.
Also had my first student come to office hours. This went well.
