Just as I was about to describe my apt-get problem to #ubuntu, it went away... now I have pdflatex working, and installed a couple of other goodies: sshfs and synaptic.

Now, let's get ESS working!

The first step in solving a programming problem is to explain it clearly to the teddy bear on the chair. Or the cat.

It's remarkable how often this provides a solution.

ah, this reminds me of a few things:

* the concept of self-explanation in education
* my time as a TA when I was able to help students who were doing a project I knew nothing about
* an old blog post where I defend a view I've come to disagree with. (Now I'd say that "low-hanging" is relative to where you are, and over enough time, it's not hard to grow tall)

Also, as an activity, hacking isn't quite as logical as programming.
