I remember hearing that there's a more equal distribution of winners where lotteries use 'quick-pick' machines, which choose a set of numbers for customers to save them time, and do so in a more random fashion than they do themselves. This means, however, there's less chance of 'roll-overs', where lack of jackpot winners one week mean the winners funds carry over to the following week. Of course, rollovers make the lottery more appealing, so it's often not in the interest of the lottery manager to even out the distribution of numbers picked.
