I want a refreshing PDF viewer, one that:

(a) does not lock a file when viewing it
(b) refreshes when the current file is updated

For Windows, SumatraPDF seems to be the only one that meets the above criteria (I've also tried Acrobat, Firefox and IE). Unfortunately, SumatraPDF sometimes renders colorful slides as black&white, and some slides it can't render at all.

I noticed this problem with Adobe Reader when I was trying to do LaTeX stuff... The worst part is, at some point they ripped out the DDE commands so you couldn't even automate the closing. Is it LaTeX stuff you're doing?

I would add (c) Not the primary target for malware.

Oh, and if you haven't tried Foxit, do. The MSI version will leave out the toolbar, though the search function will still hook into Ask.com for some reason. http://downloads.foxitsoftware.com/getfile.php?product=reader&version=3.2&language=enu&build=0303&filetype=msi&mirror=cdn01
