GMail's clock gets confused whenever I travel West... It thinks I'm still at GMT+1, even though I explicitly told it that I'm back at GMT-8.

What is your computer's time zone set to? It generally matches whatever time zone your computer is set to, though it may need to be refreshed once for the change to take effect.

Terminological clarification: for the current purposes, crossing the International date line towards the Americas means "going West".
