In order to make short URLs for my wiki, I need to modify .htaccess so that it redirects the request (behind the scenes) for "wiki/Page" to the long URL "wiki/index.php?title=Page" (i.e. the actual URL), but whenever I create the .htaccess file (even if I leave it empty), my page says:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Does your .htaccess file have the necessary read/write permissions set? The times I've gotten 500 errors, it's been because my PHP scripts weren't marked as executable. (Beyond that, I guess I'm not much help...)

This requires SSHing into the host, correct?
All I have, though, is an FTP URL: ftp://optimize@75.125.60.6

Entering this into PuTTY, I always get "connection timed out" instead of a login prompt.

um, hopefully the server is set to allow htaccess overrides on a per-directory basis. :/
