Oct. 27th, 2007 10:23 pmI just found out that my Bishop book has 6 blank pages (i.e. missing the right pages), at the part where it talks about maximum likelihood estimates for the Gaussian.
I bought my book from warehouse_deals, a subsidiary of Amazon which sells overstock and slightly damaged books. Given this, and the facts that my order was made on Aug 3, I expected that I'd be stuck with this book.
After putting my number on a web form, Amazon called me, 10pm on a Saturday. I spoke to an Indian-sounding lady, who was very polite and apologetic. When I told her I wanted a replacement, she told me to quickly order a *new* book for $49.10 (the old, 2nd-rate one was $41.23 + 3.99 shipping), since there were only 2 left in stock. She gave me free shipping.
I need to go to the post office to ship it back, which will cost $3.99. To compensate for this, she gave me a $5 coupon towards my next purchase.
Not a bad experience, I have to say.
I wonder what proportion of people notice defects, what proportion of those make a complaint, and what proportion of those get their money back.
I am also curious about the rate of printing defects. Since this is a pretty recent book, my prior was that this rate was low. OTOH, I did order from a place that sells books with minor defects. But IMHO, missing 6 pages from the middle of the book is not a minor defect, and I imagine they didn't know about this.
