through Orbitz.

I'll see Detroit on the way there and Minneapolis on the way back. The connection is kinda tight, but what the heck! This was the cheapest option.

55 minutes isn't tight for a domestic connection. In most airports the minimum is about 25 minutes. An hour is pretty close to optimal IMO - enough that you'll probably make it, but not so much that you end up waiting around in the airport forever. And even if you miss that connection, Northwest has four more flights to LA later in the day, so you're not really in bad shape.

And a three and a half hour connection is long enough you can probably leave the airport and do something if you like. I have no idea how easy/fast it is so go somewhere interesting from MSP though.

if i remember correctly, DTW is a really great airport for getting around fast in. It has this sweet tram that goes the entire length of the (very looong) Northwest terminal, with a stop in the middle and one at each end. Also, if your flight gets delayed, it's a pretty cool airport to be stuck in.
