CMU's PL department is all about typed languages. They therefore hate Paul Graham. So it's no surprise they don't care about his company. :-P

I expect it has more to do with the fact that you have to commit to moving to either Boston to get their money.

(1) it's only for a summer, unless you actually succeed.
(2) lots of people finishing up here would like to move to Boston.
