Mar. 7th, 2006 11:09 amWhat do you call the metallic, right-triangle-shaped part of a door that normally sticks out, and that retreats into the door when you turn the handle, thereby freeing the door?
My door has no turnable handle on the outside and, once closed, is effectively locked to the outside, so the above operation must be done by turning the key to the right, after undoing the 1 or 2 degrees of locking. Unfortunately, my lock can get into a certain state in which turning to the right locks it 1 degree again, and at this state, I can keep turning my key to the right infinitely many times (1, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0, ...). In such a state, I have no reliable way of opening my door. (I almost went to a hotel this Saturday night). I could experiment with door-opening techniques, but I would need: * an extra key * someone to be inside the apartment to turn the handle in case I get stuck outside.
In any case, my landlord should replace the lock with a non-defective one, before I actually spend a night in a hotel.

At the moment my LL worry threads consist of:
1) The electricity wiring for the house runs part of the neighbors's apartment and the furnaces for the other units. (Note - landlord pays utilities for all units but ours!)
2) The fridge makes a terrible noise when running. Gas stove doesn't light. This one is sleeping as LL might be processing this.
3) LL's friend / malignance guy lives in building - and has been using our dryer.
#3 is amazing to me - Sunday morning at 8am he unlocks the outside door to the basement comes in and starts using the dryer. I held my tongue but need to deal with this someone.
