For the new students, I just made: Guide to Saving Money in Amsterdam
There's also a bunch of stuff I wanted to say about bad advisors, and feeling disoriented and out-of-place (many others felt "dumb", since our "Core Logic" class assumed a much higher level than most of us had), but I'm not sure if they apply anymore. My year were the guinea pigs.
They didn't care about why I came here. They all seemed to assume that I wanted to be a mathematical logician and informed me that I was "way behind". My advisor, a slow-thinking old man, made a bunch of recommendations without knowing (or wanting to know) either my background or my interests. I later changed to another advisor, who was too far the other way (hyper), with the only common feature being that they didn't hear what I had to say (while the first didn't listen to me, the second confabulated my words to fit his wild imagination). Needless to say, this didn't meet my expectations for a "cool", interdisciplinary institute... I became pragmatic, and devised a way to complete my degree requirements while learning interesting and useful things (from the best of my knowledge at the time).
I could still rant about Dutch bureaucracy, and crap university services. In any case, I'm definitely a lot more self-reliant (and untrusting) after living here!
