In the next 3 days, I am going to decide my fate for next year (or maybe just the fall).
I could go to graduate school (and make real progress in my life, despite the pain of (grading XOR paying) ), keep working (and save money, perhaps work towards a green card), although I am inclined to be a bum.
Being a bum sucks because it requires self-direction and strong discipline. I was an unproductive bum for two months this summer, fully aware of it, and doing nothing effective to become a productive bum. When I have a daily routine and other people, who I see physically (what's a good antonym for "virtually"?), expect me to be doing a certain thing, it's much easier to stay focused.
So, if I do take the year off, I want to explore different ways to survive, what kinds of work I can make a living from. Translation and editing work comes to mind (strictly non-bullshit, non-fiction texts, of course), as does tutoring. Also, I don't see why I couldn't do freelance work through the Internet.
What's your opinion?
