trying to move
Jan. 10th, 2002 06:08 pmYesterday I was looking at apartments.
I visited this Davis Sq apartment, which seemed to be inhabited by Bunker Hill Community College grads and students. They had me sit down and chat. It was a lot of fun. We laughed a lot. I haven't felt so easy among strangers this quickly in a long time.
Problem: 1 small bathroom for 3 people.
3 Frost:
--------
* $818 / month
* Never see most of the people. We definitely don't hang out. The one I see the most is a bitch to me.
* good parking space (which costs $80/month)
* 19 minutes from work (car)
* 5 minutes from Harvard Sq (bike)
* 3-minute-walk from Porter T.
* pay $50 for Internet, and $30 for fixed telephone.
* total cost of living here: $978 per month
* laundry facilities in basement
* house is clean and beautiful
2B West St:
-----------
* $600 / month
* Apparently fun, easygoing people
* double-sized parking space (which costs 0)
* 15 minutes from work (car)
* 9 minutes from Harvard Sq (bike)
* 4-minute-walk from Davis T
* pay $25 for Internet (sharing with 1 person) and $10 for telephone (sharing with 2 people)
* total cost of living here: $630 per month ($750 if it goes up)
* laundry facilities in basement
* apartment is clean, but not beautiful.
The rooms are about the same size, except I could have two rooms in the new house (upping my rent to $700 or $800). There is a risk that rent will go up by 20% in April. Even then, it's a good deal.
I think I'll visit 3 more and then make a decision, but I'm betting this one will win out.
