Michael Collins, NLP/machine learning researcher, has moved from MIT to Columbia Computer Science. Although I am not familiar with his work directly, he was very highly praised by William Cohen, before his invited talk at ICML '08.

I also remember talking to his student Luke Zettlemoyer about their work on "Learning Context-Dependent Mappings from Sentences to Logical Form." He also seems to have done important work on optimization: "An Efficient Projection for L1,∞ Regularization.".
