Upgrading solved:

* external monitor :-D

* wi-fi.

* I also like KDE much better than Gnome. Nice feel, and keystrokes like: alt-F2 to start programs; (ctrl)shift-left/right to switch tabs (move them); F12 to bring up a shell (yakuake)

Kinda solved:

* tablet PC: pointer is recognized but calibration problems not solved; also it seems to have some kind of conflict with the dual monitor.

Did not solve:

* US International keyboard layout issue: it's still a huge annoyance for typing Portuguese or French. (a) '+c should produce "ç", i.e. a cedille rather than an acute or diacritical comma (b) '+e should produce "é" (c) '+n should produce "'n". Having 3-stroke characters is unacceptable, as is anything requiring me to relearn to type.

New issues:

* finding a replacement for WinSplit Revolution, i.e. keystrokes for docking a window to a desired corner of the screen: a very handy feature when using large monitors.

* learning to use Gimp (rather than Paint)

Surprisingly few things need adapting to, since much of my time is spent inside emacs and Firefox, which are the same between Windows and Linux.

Many thanks to Jeff.

I don't know about F12, but Alt+F2 and Ctrl+PgUp/PgDn work under Gnome too. (although mconst said one of the default settings in Ubuntu 10.04 had Alt+F2 disabled for some reason, while it worked in 8.04.)

F12 is yakuake, which we installed separately.

look into devilspie for the window placement stuff. may not be exactly what you want though.

Yes, Alt+F2 works in GNOME as well, but it's kind of lame by default. In KDE Plasma Desktop, Alt+F2 launches something that's more similar to GNOME Do in concept, although a bit different in execution.
As for the tab shortcuts, I believe Gustavo was referring to the Konsole tabs, and you can shuffle them around as well as flip between them, which is handy if you like things to be organized.

Window Management

KWin (the KDE window manager) already has a huge set of features, but many of them are not turned on by default. You may find some of what you're looking for under System Settings->Kbd & Mouse->Global Keyboard Shortcuts, in the KWin section. Other useful things that it can do: I showed you the window tabbing, but it can also auto-tab windows by using tags - so all my chat windows (from different clients, if I wanted) group together; pin above/pin below (I think GNOME has this too).

Also be aware that KDE SC 4.5, coming in August, will have full-out window tiling support, just like many of the lightweight window managers. Yay.

If you're looking for something similar to MS Paint, KolourPaint may be more what you're looking for. GIMP is trying to be Photoshop, while KolourPaint is just trying to be a bit better than MS Paint. Unfortunately it's not maintained anymore, but I haven't had any problems.

Thanks. Yeah, I noticed it was approaching Photoshop in complexity.

Painting App

Holly, have you ever used Paint.NET on Windows? I used to love it back before I switched to Linux, because it had a nice balance of features vs simplicity. Do you know of anything like it for Linux? As I recall, Paint.NET can't be recompiled with Mono because it uses some MS-specific libraries.

No, though I've heard of it. All I remember is it was between Paint and Photoshop in complexity. I think Krita might be aiming for that level of complexity.

It seems that KDE perpetually will get better in the next release. Or at least that's what I've been hearing since 4.1 or so...
