guslI've been meaning to switch to Linux for a very long time, and there's no better time than now.
The first step is to update from 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS.
The instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LucidUpgrades#Network%20Upgrade%20for%20Ubuntu%20Desktops%20(Recommended) don't work: the Update Manager doesn't offer to upgrade the system.
My /etc/apt/sources.list seems to be ok. (I just installed R using apt-get)
