It's possible to have dynamically-generated images in static HTML, by using < IMG SRC="image.php" >, but is it possible to have dynamically-generated HTML inside a LJ post?

Does HTML provide a way of importing general content from another file?

If so, we can solve the "your large image is messing up my friends-list!" annoyance for the people with small screens, by inserting an < LJ-CUT > or putting smaller dimensions on the IMG tag for these people: you could just link to a PHP that generates the appropriate HTML.

Of course, LJ should take care of this automatically, but I've given up making suggestions to the management: they always say "we're already working on it", and never ever get it done. I wonder if DeadJournal, GreatestJournal or other open-source clones are doing any better.

http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=40:
If the problem is caused by a large image, you can turn on placeholders for images posted in your friends' entries by selecting the "Use image placeholders on your friends page" option on the Edit Personal Information page (http://www.livejournal.com/editinfo.bml). This will cause all images, or all large images (depending on your chosen setting) on your Friends page to be replaced by a small generic placeholder image, which you can click on to view the posted image. (Images that do not have a defined size will be treated as large images, for the purpose of a placeholder.)

I wonder if most images have a "defined size"... if by this, they mean tags like < IMG SRC ="photo.png" > do not have defined size. UPDATE: This option sucks: not a single image in my friends page showed up.

Does livejournal filter them out, though?

LJ apparently ignores the tags. It's ridiculous that the only way to embed stuff is in an image.

I'm pretty sure this could be done at the client-side, with something like a GreaseMonkey script or so.

The problem is whether LJ will embed non-picture content from another side.

Once it's at the clients' side, there is nothing that LJ could or couldn't do about it.

oh, now I see what you mean. Sorry. I've long wanted something like GreaseMonkey, so thanks!

But then the problem is that all my readers need to have this...

True. But then again, the large image would be messing up their friends-page, so they have an interest to run such a script in their browsers.

Someone should make this script already! When a large enough picture is found, an LJ-CUT gets put before it.
